Still Bangladesh does not have a common single emergency telephone number. So iIf you have an emergency and need a quick response from the Police, the Fire Service, Ambulance or Search and Rescue, you need to dial respective bodies phone no. In most cases, you will find someone who could understand English. However, it may be wise to take help of a local to contact with the respective emergency bodies for better communication.

Police
There are Police Stations in all main cities and towns in Bangladesh and in many rural locations. Contact details can be found in local telephone books.

Ambulance

If you need ambulance, you may call any of ambulance service providers. Private Service providers will charge around 3000 BDT for a trip in Dhaka. For cheap rate, you may call government ambulance though usually it is difficult to get government one. There is an NGO called ‘Ad Din \ provides small ambulance with 250 BDT per trip in Dhaka.

Medical Emergency

If you are wounded or don’t feel well, you may need emergency medical assistance. It is advisable to go to emergency units of larger government hospitals like Dhaka Medical College. There are three large well equipped private hospitals in Dhaka. They provide state of the art treatment with substantial fee(for average foreigners the fee would seem reasonable). And they usually support most of the prominent medical issues like heart, kidney, dental etc.

Pharmacy and buying medicine

Visitors bringing in a quantity of medication are advised to carry a doctor’s certificate to avoid possible problems with Bangladesh Customs.

In Bangladesh, to buy medicine from the pharmacy or medicine, Doctor’s prescription is not required. However, Doctor’s prescriptions are needed to obtain certain drugs(e.g. sleeping tablets, pain killers) in Bangladesh.

After doing the general diary, you may need the notarized copy of it. At different places in Dhaka, you will find notary public and they may do the notary for 500 BDT to 1000 BDT. However, locals may do the notary from Nilkhet, Gaosul Azom Market and the fee may be as low as 12 Taka/page. Make sure to get your original general diary and English version both notarized.
